Chautemps, Camille
(1885-1963)
   political figure
   Born in Paris, Camille Chautemps, who as a deputy had represented the Radical-Socialist Party (1919), served several times as minister (1924 to 1926), and was premier in February 1930 and again from November 1933 to january 1934, when he had to resign after the stavisky affair. He succeeded léon blum as head of the government (June 1937-Jan-uary 1938, and January-March 1938), and tried to modify the policies of the popular front. For this reason, he disappointed the Socialists and the Communists. Recalled to the government shortly after the Anschluss between Nazi Germany and Austria (April 1938) he became a member of the cabinet of paul reynaud (1940) but left when Marshal philippe pétain formed a government in July of that year.
